Dysfunctional Americana 14: Pomona, California

The so-called "Safe Surrender" facility at Pomona Valley Hospital. It might be more accurately called a very fancy baby dump box. The logo on the box (actually the door) is the same as that used for the so-called "Garden of Angels" cemetery. It makes you wonder what these people are really thinking when this same logo is at the top of each headstone in their cemetery.

(Pictures of the cemetery appear in a following entry.)

For a sober assessment of so-called "safe haven laws" that encourage the creation of peculiar spectacles like this, see this article at the Bastard Nation website. Also see the statement from the Governor of Hawaii vetoing such legislation there.

looks better than a plastic bag and a dumpster

While I do find the "Dump Boxes" very creepy, I fail to see how your own brand of Demogoguery helps this particular situation. I too want to be "left alone" by religious extremists, but that does not automatically make everything done by the religious right an "intrusion". If they want to provide safe haven for infants that would otherwise be abandoned, good for them.

Nice masoleum-esque building with lovely landscaping!

If these people had spent this kind of money on REACHING OUT AND HELPING pregnant women/families in the first place, this dump-box would not be necessary, would it?

My bother was born at that hospital. Looks likes a nice place to pray, no place to leave the baby only
on the hard floor, it does not seem like a safe place to leave a baby not even a warm bed. More out reach to pregnant woman or just some one to talk to could help.

Wont that be a wonderful history for the babies left there. When they become adults, maybe they can bring their own kids to the dump site and show them around. They can explain that this is their family heritage since they will know virtually nothing else.

SHAME ON ANYONE WHO THINKS THIS BABY "DUMP" IS A GOOD IDEA!!!
LEGAL DUMPING OF HUMANS!!!
WHY STOP AT BABY DUMPS??? WHY NOT ALL HUMANS THAT ARE INCONVIENANT, ALL PEOPLE WHO DONT FIT INTO OUR LIFE. WHAT ABOUT A NO QUESTIONS ASKED SENIORS DUMP?
LEAVE GRANDMA IN HER WHEELCHAIR AND.... DRIVE AWAY?
LET SOMEONE ELSE CHANGE HER DIAPERS?
WHAT? COM'ON? WHAT IS THIS?

Horrible!

I know that some people who are in crisis cannot fathom better things for themselves and therefore certainly not for their child either therefore- it concerns me deeply that the need for this type of thing exists- but it apparently does. Has anyone seen a decrease in babies stuffed in trash cans because of this so called 'intervention'? Has anyone not drowned their child becaue they can now drop them in such a dump site? WHy not work on very agressively and publically changing the way we think about family and children in this country and start prioritizing that instead of all the other priorities that are glorified and promoted like careers and 'take care of number one'and the push for new and carefree all the time? I think young people have been sold the glamorous concept and crisis pregnancies just don't fit in- not that simple and who can even imagine doing that to a human not even to a dog?

This place is a whole lot better then leaving a baby in some dumpster. I see that so-called baby dump every day and as long as it saves one life (which it has) then it cant be "horrible" think about how many babies will be saved there comparaed to in a plastic bag in a dumpster behind some store
